Dr. Stephanie Souza

My interest in psychology began with an introductory philosophy class. For the first time, I found myself sitting with questions about human nature and the human experience—questions about meaning, choice, freedom, connection, and what it means to be a person. I was fascinated by questions that did not necessarily have clear or definitive answers, and that curiosity eventually led me to psychology.

About

In psychology, I found an opportunity to be with people as they encountered some of the same uncertainties I had become interested in: the anxiety of not knowing, the questions we may never be able to fully answer, and the tension between who we are and who we long to become. I became interested in how people come to understand not only what they are experiencing, but their relationship with the questions themselves—and how they might find a way of living that feels meaningful and authentic to them.

I truly find people fascinating: the ways we protect ourselves, the reasons we make certain choices, the patterns we develop in our relationships, and the ways we can sometimes become pulled away from the person we want to be. I also believe there is something deeply important and valuable in understanding these parts of ourselves rather than simply trying to change them.

This curiosity is at the heart of how I work. Rather than seeing your struggles as something to simply fix or overcome, I want to understand what they may be telling us about you, your relationships, and the ways you have learned to navigate the world.

“We take pleasure not only in the growth of our patient but also in the ripple effect—the salutary influence our patients have upon those whom they touch in life.”

Irvin D. Yalom, The Gift of Therapy

That idea of the ripple effect has stayed with me. The work we do in therapy does not exist in isolation. As we become more aware of ourselves, our relationships, and the ways we move through the world, that awareness can influence the people and relationships around us.

A hand touching still water, sending ripples outward

I created this website to offer a glimpse into how I work and what it might feel like to work together. My hope is that as you explore, you get a sense of who I am, what I value, and whether this feels like a place where you could slow down, become more curious about yourself, and begin to understand your experience in a different way.
